The creation of point clouds has become easier and more accessible. With devices such as the iPad or inexpensive scanners, the environment can be digitized quickly and cost-effectively. For more extensive and detailed projects, it is also possible to hire specialized service providers. This article focuses on how to create point clouds using an iPhone or iPad.
Pointcloud scanning on mobile devices
Current models of mobile devices (e.g. Pro and Pro Max models of the iPhone and iPad, but also many Android devices) offer the possibility to quickly create 3D models of rooms or objects thanks to their integrated cameras and sometimes even LiDAR scanner.
Scanning App
The 3D Scanner App has already been tested by us. The described process & tips also work with other apps with slightly modified operation.
Scanning Process
Preparation
- Clear the area to be scanned before scanning to achieve the best results
- Avoid people in the scanning area
Using the 3D scanner app
- Use "Normal" mode for most situations
- For more complex structures, switch to "LiDAR Advanced"
- Start and end the scan with the red button
Movement during the scan
- Move the device slowly from bottom to top, as if you were painting a wall with a paint roller, to fully capture each section
- Try to scan each area only once
- Also scan under and behind objects
- Areas marked in red indicate where data is missing
Processing the Scan
- Process the scan via "Process"
- Start the editing process via "Edit"
- Select the "Crop with Box" tool under "Tools" to crop a section
Export
- Select the "Share" button to access the export options
- Select the Point cloud format (this may be a premium feature of the app)
- Make sure that "High Density" is selected
- Set "Z axis up"
- Export it as "PTS"
- Transfer the exported file to your VR computer
Further Export Options
.glb files can also be exported from the above-mentioned 3D scanner app, which can be imported into the Halocline library directly via our CAD import.
